about: the archive

With insa.style, Insa Wagner gives us extensive glimpse into 2 years of negotiating their social environment as an autistic, non-binary body. Through a meticulously stringent naming system, Insa makes use of object-inherent meta-information to hyperlink the documentation and data across their mind and various documentation tools.

This web archive is published as an open studio, with more internal infrastructure to follow – creating different paths and ways of exploring the archive.

insa.style v0.1 was firstly embedded in a physical installation at the HFBK Annual 2021 Show with Klasse Denny. It showed a special Scroll View of the website, in which a natural scrolling motion was artificially programmed, to mimic Insa moving through their phone archive. The megaphone was installed in a subtly tilted angle to direct the gaze downwards – creating the well-known ‚text neck‘ posture in every visitor.

Under the title ‚Chronology Of My Body (2018-2020)‘, this installation appended Insa’s earlier work ‚Chronology Of My Head (2016-2018)‘, which was a touchable archive that featured two [2] years of foiled hair carpets and face samples in the form of make-up wipes. The latter was presented in 2019 at Frappant Gallery, as part of POSSY Collective’s ‚SHIFT – Beyond The Binary‘ group exhibition in Hamburg.

about: insa

Insa Wagner [they/them] is a trans* non-binary, autistic artist who constructs complex intimate data systems [physical~digital~mobile] to navigate their existence. In those chronologically connected structures, they explore the relations to and within themselves, as well as to their human surroundings.

Insa’s systems depict highly gendered materials of tactile self-expression, and deliberately deconstruct the matter through associative, hyperbolic play and re_contextualisation. They further research digital community structures and material functions in human bonding.

Insa Wagner has a BA in Communication Design [HAW Hamburg w/ Prof. Dr. Anke Haarmann, Prof. Heike Grebin] and is currently doing their MA in Fine Art at HFBK Hamburg in Klasse Denny [w/ Prof. Simon Denny.] Further, they have a professional background in Hair & Make-Up, Nails and Styling.
